Preparing for an Interior Design Consultation

An essential part of Silk Design & Build’s interior design process is the initial consultation we have with our new clients. The first design consultation is usually when our commercial interior design consultant and meets a client for the first time in person and on-site. It is one of the most exciting stages of the design project for our clients, as they get to communicate their interior ideas and build a rapport with our designer. For our designer, it’s an opportunity to gain a deep understanding of our client’s needs, share our design processes, discuss budgets, and showcase our expert design knowledge.
To get the most out of your initial design consultation, we recommend that our clients undergo a certain amount of preparation before the meeting. When a client comes to the consultation well-prepared, our designers have more information and scope to develop concrete plans and ideas.

Research Some Design Ideas

Whether you are looking to completely transform a healthcare office interior or retrofit a commercial building, one of the most valuable things you can do before the consultation, is to carry out some of your own interior design research. In the past, some of our clients have created vision boards using online resources like Pinterest or design briefs which layout examples of designs they like and, more importantly, dislike. Our designers work best with visual concepts; showing us what you love and, in turn, what you dislike will help us envision your ideal space.
Also, providing your building’s construction plans to your designer can be extremely helpful for the later part of the design process.

Prepare Questions

We always encourage our new clients to write down possible questions ahead of the consultation. Often they have questions relating to our interior design project management process or our health and safety practices. There is no such thing as a wrong question, and the initial consultation is all about answering those important questions. This strengthens the trust between our designers and the client as they can talk freely about the project at hand.

Establish a budget

Before the consultation, you will likely have established a preliminary budget for the project. Sharing this budget information with our designers at the initial meeting is essential for us to understand what we are working with to bring your vision to life. Once our designers have developed a plan (with your budget limitations in mind), they can then return to you with realistic expectations for the project.

Be Open to New ideas

Once you have communicated your design ideas to us, prepare to hear some new ideas from our designers. Our Silk Design and Build design team is experts in what they do, and they often come up with revolutionary ideas for your space. We listen and carefully consider your goals, budget, preferences, and from there, we create design ideas that have the potential to transform commercial spaces. Do your best to stay open-minded, and we will deliver fresh, novel designs every time.
